Caroline SkaeCaroline is an advocate for sexual assault survivors. She has used her voice to spur change through her TED Talk and a speech at the California capitol building.
Mark Twain said, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not the absence of fear.”
No person in my life has exemplified this notion more than my sister, Caroline. Be it the lead up to her TED Talk where she seamlessly spoke in front of a sold-out auditorium or waiting at the Capitol Building in Sacramento to speak in front of California senators in great detail about her sexual assault and where she successfully compelled the passing of a bill which would safeguard others in the future. Somehow despite nerves in the lead up she has always stunned me with her near perfect execution. She makes it look easy – everything she does – but it’s not, though she would lead you to believe otherwise. What’s enabled Caroline to succeed at everything she does is her stick-to-itiveness. Be it long hours in the QL+ lab crafting prosthetic devices, her advocacy work at Safer, in surfing, scuba diving or being a great friend and family member, Caroline puts her head down, gets to work and stays in the game until she reaches her goal, long after many have thrown in the towel. She is selfless, a transformer from victim to victorious, a professional turner of lemons to lemonade, a phoenix rising from the ashes time and time again. Written by: Lauren Skae, sister |
